Basic Supplies for Developing your Photographs

If you are a photographer who uses film to capture photos, you may want to begin the process of developing your own photos. This can give you more control of your final image as well as increase your creative satisfaction. Of course, in order to do this with ease, at your own home or studio, you will need to build a dark room. But don’t fret this is a very easy and affordable process. You’ll be shocked at how cheap it is.

Step One: Build your Darkroom:

You definitely do not have to build a brand new room for photo developing. But you do need a room that is pretty closed off and has no windows in it. Usually, a bathroom or closet is your best bet. You may also think about using an unfinished room in your basement, after all it will get quite messy.

Step Two: Purchase an Enlarger:

For those of you unfamiliar with this tool, an enlarger is simply a transparency projector that is used to produce additional prints from your film. In essence, an enlarger makes your tiny photo on film larger and enhances its appearance at the same time. An enlarger is also great for cropping out unneeded parts of a photo and/or removing unwanted colors. You may want to look into used ones although brand new enlargers are quite inexpensive.

Step Three: Get all Necessary Printing Supplies:

You definitely need a safe light. This will work to illuminate the room and it is specifically designed for dark rooms filled with films of photographs. It is safe in that it doesn’t wreck your undeveloped photos like any other light would. Next you want to choose your papers. This is an important decision. Try to lean towards a thicker paper with a bright white coloring. This has proven to produce the best developing. You can also choose from either matte or gloss as a finish. The next thing you’ll need is an adjustable easel. This will make the developing process so much easier. You can easily prop or lean your photos along the easel for support and last minute visual inspections. You may also check into an enlarger lens which will give you the ability to create smaller or larger photo sizes using just one negative. This is the heart of your developing so you want to find the highest quality one you can. Of course, this will be the costliest part of your overall purchase, but it’s worth it.

In order to develop your film in your newly built dark room you need multiple trays as well as all the necessary chemicals. Look into developer trays and be sure that your film will easily fit into the tubs. There you have it. The things that will cost the most are definitely your enlargers and your chemicals but with cheaper items such as easels and special papers, developing your own photographs will prove to be much more inexpensive in the long run.
